Rodents are becoming an issue all year round at the moment, not just a winter problem and this is largely due to the increased rainfall. When breeding conditions are perfect you will see an increase in any pest activity.
There are a few simple steps you can take to minimise rodent issues in and around your home.
- Remove food sources: Make sure that there is no pet food lying around or access to pantry items by keeping food stored in sealed containers. If you have a compost bin, turn it over regularly with a garden fork. Take your rubbish out daily and place a brick on top of the wheelie bin lid.
- Remove water sources: Make sure there isn’t any water in the bottom of pot plants etc (this will also help with mosquitos). Fix any tap leaks.
- Remove nesting options: Declutter is the key here. Make sure there is no access to stored paper as they will tear it up to create a warm nesting environment.
- Block Access: Use steel wool to pack tightly into any gaps around plumbing etc that rodents could get in. Use an expanda foam product around the steel wool to block access points. Be mindful that any overhanging trees or shrubbery against your home can provide access inside.
- Deter them: There are some plants that are claimed to repel rodents, such as: Lavender, Mint, Garlic, Rosemary, Marigolds, Catnip, Chrysanthemums, Daffodils and Basil. You can also use essential oils such as Peppermint, Lemon, Citronella and Eucalyptus which some people claim to be effective.
