The most common time that people discover they have termites is during a renovation. You open up a wall and see … “horror or horrors” …. TERMITES…. EVERYWHERE!!
They have been working away unseen and unheard behind the walls or in the ceiling without your knowledge. This is the reason an Annual Termite Inspection is recommended as the minimum course of action you can take to protect you home…
So.. What do you do now? Well there are a few things I need to stress NOT TO DO!
1. DO NOT DISTURB THEM
2. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TREAT THEM YOURSELF
What you should do is cover them back over and tape the area back up. Keep it dark in there. We want to minimise any change of temperature and light. This is because if these things are noticed by the main colonly they will seal off that area.. effectively sacrificing all those workers… but for the greater good of protecting the queen. We want them to remain active until we get there. We will then treat them with a colony control substance. This substance is carried back to the colony by the workers and fed to everyone else.. This ensures the entrie problem is solved.. Not just the few you can see. A Queen termite lays 1000 eggs/day and lives for up to 30 years.. So unless we provide a colony control treatment the issue will only continue on… Because they are a subterranean creature the main nest or colony could be burried deeply in under your house or anywhere in your yard.
